If your program is NOT listed above, continue on to the checklist below.
Electronic Application Checklist
Welcome to the electronic application introduction and checklist page. We use a self-managed approach to application submission. This will assure more reliable handling and more rapid consideration of your application. To submit your self-managed application, complete the following steps:
- Verify the deadlines for applying to your intended program by checking your intended program's web site. In the absence of a specific program deadline, the general deadline for fall applications is February 1 and for Spring applications is November 1. Your program will tell you if there is any flexibility in the published deadline.
- Complete and submit your electronic application . You will be asked to provide a valid credit card (Discover, Mastercard, or Visa) for payment of the electronic application fee when you submit your application. If necessary, you can download and print a paper application, which will require a higher processing fee.
- Compile the following documents, along with any other materials required by your program:
- Request an official transcript from each college/university you attended.
- Ask your registrars to send the transcript to you — not to UConn — in a sealed envelope.
- Applicants from India: must send mark sheets, attested by the university registrar.
- Do not open the envelope or break the seal when you receive it.
- Your application will not be considered until all official transcripts are received.
- If you attended an international university, we require transcripts in both English and the native language of the university.
- If you completed a degree and that fact is not contained in your transcript, then we also need an official copy of your degree certificate or diploma.
- Failure to submit transcripts from all educational institutions, regardless of whether or not a degree was received, may be grounds for cancellation of admission.
- Transcripts become the property of the University.
- The most common reason for delayed consideration of applications is missing or unofficial transcripts. Be sure to include all of your transcripts with your application.
- Unofficial, scanned, or notarized copies are not acceptable.
- Request your letters of recommendation.
- There is no specific Graduate School form for letters of recommendation.
- Ask the recommenders to send the letters directly to you in sealed envelopes — not to UConn.
- Ask the recommenders to sign across the seal
- Do not open the envelopes or break the seals.
- Compose and print your Personal Statement of Purpose.
- This document should tell your program's admissions committee all you would like to bring out in a personal interview.
- Include your reasons for undertaking graduate work, your ultimate plans, and how you happened to select the field in which you hope to concentrate. Details about your preparation, your strengths and weaknesses as a student, any academic honors, scholarships, or fellowships you have received, will all be helpful.
- You also should consult any website(s) maintained by the graduate program to which you applying; these often list additional dimensions that are of particular interest to that program (e.g., your choice of graduate advisor and a rationale for it).
- The committee wants to know those things about you that cannot be expressed quantitatively.
- Obtain and complete a Financial Declaration form.
- Once you are recommended for admission, you must submit evidence of adequate financial support to cover the costs of one full year of study at the University of Connecticut before we can issue a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019).
- Financial aid from UConn, usually in the form of a graduate assistantship and tuition waiver, may be used to satisfy some or all of this requirement. Graduate assistantships are available in most UConn programs. Please contact your intended program of study for more information and availability.
- While we do not need it until you are admitted, you can download and print the Financial Declaration Form for your admission year, to save time later.
- If you have one or more dependents (a spouse or children under 21 years of age) who will accompany you to the U.S., you must include additional financial support on the form. Please pay close attention to the additional information that is required for each dependent accompanying you.
- Your admission cannot be finalized without proper certification of the financial ability to provide support.
- Include a photocopy of your passport with your application materials. If you currently are here in the United States on a visa, we also ask that you submit a copy of your valid visa documentation.
- Check with your intended program for any additional required materials and enclose those as well.
- Mail everything in one package to:
University of Connecticut
Graduate School, Unit 1006
438 Whitney Road Extension
Storrs, CT 06269-1006
- Request an official transcript from each college/university you attended.
- Request that your standardized test scores (GRE, GMAT, others) be submitted to UConn if your program requires them.
- The GRE code for UConn Storrs is 3915.
- The GRE code for the UConn Health Center is 3931.
- More information on the GRE is available from the Educational Testing Service. Information on the GMAT (Business) is available from the Graduate Management Admission Council.
- Complete a Test of English Proficiency. If you are not a native speaker of English, you must submit evidence of your proficiency in the English language.
- If you use the results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), you must have a minimum overall score of 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or 80 for the internet-based test.
- If you submit results from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), you must have an average overall score of at least 6.5.
- To qualify for an unrestricted appointment as a graduate teaching assistant with classroom instructional contact, you must present evidence of proficiency in spoken English . On the IELTS, with a score of 8 or higher on the Speaking Band you will be eligible for classroom instructional contact with no further English proficiency testing. With a score of 7 on the Speaking band, you may be permitted to have classroom instructional contact after further testing by the International Teaching Assistant Program to assess your need for English support.
- In all cases your submitted test results must be no more than two years old.
- Results from other forms of testing may also be used by the UConn International Teaching Assistant Program (ITAP) to assess your spoken English proficiency. Please contact the ITAP office for more information on these alternative assessment tools.
Congratulations! When you reach this point your application should be complete. We will keep you informed of the status of your application as it is considered.
